Red clover flower, (Trifolium pratense), organic

Trifolium pratense, Red Clover, is a short-lived herbaceous perennial in the Fabaceae (bean) family, native to Europe, western Asia, and north-west Africa. The plant is variable in size (20–80cm tall), with trifoliate green leaves and dark pink flowers. As well as providing a popular food source for bees, Red Clover is widely grown as a fodder crop for grazing animals, valued for its nitrogen-fixing quality, which improves soil fertility.

Health Benefits

In China it was used to treat coughs and as a diuretic, while in western cultures it has been thought to improve the health of hair and skin, and to treat osteoporosis, heart disease, arthritis, and menopausal symptoms.

Its high levels of isoflavone, which are a type of phytoestrogen — a plant compound that can weakly mimic estrogen in the body – it may alleviate hot flushes and night sweats – there is some good evidence to suggest significant improvements in hair and skin texture for post-menopausal women.

Some research has shown a connection between isoflavone intake and a decrease in osteoporosis risk
